Common Bicycle Problems and How to Fix Them

Bicycle maintenance
When cycling, it’s inevitable to encounter some issues. However, not all problems require a trip to the bike shop—many minor issues can be easily fixed at home. Here are some common bicycle problems and simple solutions to get you back on the road quickly.

Pedal Falling Off

If your pedal falls off the crank arm, first check whether the threads on the crank arm are intact. If the threads are damaged, you’ll need to replace the crank. However, if the threads are still in good condition, simply reinstall and tighten the pedal securely.

Persistent Noise from the Rear Derailleur

A sharp, continuous noise from the rear derailleur typically has two causes. If your bike has been dropped or involved in an impact, check if the derailleur hanger is bent. A severely bent hanger should be replaced. Another common cause is dirty jockey wheels—if they haven’t been cleaned for a long time, debris buildup can create noise. In this case, simply clean the jockey wheels with a degreaser to resolve the issue.

Chain Noise
A noisy chain is often due to insufficient lubrication. If your chain lacks lube, the metal components will rub against each other, creating an irritating sound. Apply chain lubricant or oil to ensure smooth operation.

Flat Tire Right After a Repair

If your inner tube bursts again immediately after a repair, there are two possible reasons:

Misaligned Rim Tape – If the puncture is on the inside of the tube, the rim tape may have shifted, exposing the spokes and causing the tube to be cut. Foreign Objects in the Tire – If the puncture is on the outer side of the tube, there may be a sharp object, such as a thorn or glass shard, still lodged inside the tire. Carefully run your fingers along the inside of the tire to locate and remove any debris before reinstalling the tube.
